I'm using publicly available data from the Center for Disease Control to answer a question prompted by a New England Journal of Medicine article, which documented a decline in hospital visits during COVID lockdown for heart disease related issues. My project uses the CDC data to show that deaths by heart attacks also went down during COVID lockdown compared to the same period a year earlier. Surprisingly, my project also shows that in the same period in New York City, deaths by heart attacks doubled compared to the prior period and in the peak week were 4 x higher.
